V.iolet - Ack [slapmp3_008]

by Violet

Published September 6, 2002

Washington, D.C.-based act V.IOLET is Jeff Surak, one half of the duo V. with releases on Bake/Staalplaat, Public Eyesore, and their own label ZEROMOON Recordings (http://www.zeromoon.com). In the vein of cut-paste-loop ambient industrial musics, "ack" is a new 2-track, 17-minute affair which makes adept use of all musical dichotomies: loud/quiet, noise/melody, high/low, tension/release. Surak develops his pieces around the delicate balance of these extreme perceptual thresholds. Constructed from all manner of looped and manipulated real-world samples: hurdy gurdy, percussion, cymbals, industrial hums and crackles, etc. Very skilled electronics indeed.
